Pintail Snipe Juvenile (September 2026, Okinawa)
Pintail Snipe Juvenile (September 2026, Okinawa)

In Japan, snipe species can be observed primarily in rice fields during spring and autumn. Four species are typically seen during these seasons: the Common, Pintail, Swinhoe's, and Latham's Snipe. They are all remarkably similar, making identification extremely difficult. Furthermore, they are inherently wary birds, rarely affording opportunities for a thorough, unhurried observation of their entire bodies.

This bird is thought to be a juvenile Pintail Snipe. It is characterised by a relatively short bill and very large eyes. Additionally, the prominent forehead, short tail, and stocky build are distinctive features of this species.

Although Japan is still experiencing high humidity and hot weather, there is also the pleasure of finding such rare birds.
